What we machine on this process
Automatic screw machining is suited to repeatable round parts made from bar stock. Typical work includes pins, spacers, bushings, threaded studs, small shafts, fittings and custom fasteners. The process becomes attractive when one drawing is repeated across a production batch and the part has turned diameters, shoulders, grooves, bores or threads that can be produced in a consistent cycle.
Send a STEP, IGES, DWG, DXF or dimensioned PDF with the quantity and material grade. We review the diameter-to-length ratio, thread details, tolerances and finishing requirements before recommending automatic turning, Swiss-type machining or another route. The quote includes DFM feedback within 24 hours so the drawing can be corrected before production.
Materials and finishes
Automatic screw machining can be reviewed for aluminium, stainless steel, carbon and alloy steel, brass, copper, bronze and titanium. Common grades include aluminium 2024, 5052, 6061 and 7075; stainless 301, 303, 304, 304L, 316 and 316L; free-cutting 12L14; and steel grades such as 1045, 1215 and 4140. The exact grade must be stated on the drawing because material choice affects tool life, cycle time, thread quality and price, and the materials page sets out what runs well on bar-fed machines.
Finishing options include anodizing, black oxide, zinc plating, nickel plating, passivation, polishing and heat treatment through our vetted partner network. Identify masking areas, thread protection and any post-finish dimensional requirement. Related material guidance is available on the materials and surface finishes pages.
Size, tolerance and capacity limits
The practical route depends on the part diameter, length, geometry, quantity and tolerance rather than on a generic machine label. Precision features can be reviewed to 0.01 mm when the drawing and process support the requirement; general dimensions follow ISO 2768-m unless your drawing states another tolerance block. If a part needs features on several faces, CNC milling or turning-and-milling may be more suitable.
Production orders start from 50 pieces per style and material. Prototype quantities are reviewed from the drawing, and samples typically ship in 5-10 days after approval. Production typically ships in 25-35 days after drawing approval, subject to material, finish and quantity.
Documents and shipping
The quote review checks the drawing revision, material callout, thread standard and critical features before programming. Every order ships with a material certificate (MTR) and pre-shipment photos of the actual parts. The packing list and carton markings are prepared before dispatch. Additional checking or document requirements should be listed in the RFQ.
Industries we support
Small turned components are used in automotive assemblies, electronics hardware, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, industrial machinery and general hardware. See custom fasteners, bushings and sleeves and custom shafts for related part types.
Design guidelines for cost and manufacturability
Keep diameters, thread depths and reliefs clear on the drawing. Avoid a thread deeper than the assembly requires, and identify whether a bore is through or blind. Standard tool access, sensible edge breaks and consistent diameters usually reduce cycle time. Send the drawing, quantity, material and finish through the request a quote form for a process review.
