12 Design Changes That Cut Machined Part Cost
Most cost-reduction conversations start with the supplier's price and end with a few percent. The larger lever is the drawing, where a single change — removing one tight tolerance, one second operation, one non-standard grade — can halve the part price without touching quality.

- Biggest lever
- Remove a setup or a tolerance band
- Second
- Standard material instead of special
- Third
- Loosen what the function does not need
Price is a property of the drawing. Twelve changes, and the first four are where the money is.
Specifications
| Biggest lever | Removing a setup or a second operation |
|---|---|
| Second lever | Relaxing tolerances that do not locate anything |
| Third lever | Standard material and a single finish callout |
| Typical result | 15–30% from adopting three or four items |
| Included with every quote | DFM feedback identifying the levers |
Frequently asked questions
What is the single biggest way to reduce machining cost?
Removing a second operation. A feature that needs re-fixturing doubles the handling time, and handling is the least visible line in a quote. Moving the feature to the same face as the rest often removes it entirely.
Does a tighter tolerance really increase the price that much?
It does when it passes the point the process holds without special measures. ±0.01 mm is routine; ±0.005 mm usually adds grinding and a controlled inspection step, which can double the piece price on a small part.
Is it worth switching suppliers to cut cost?
Not if the drawing stays the same. The structure of the cost is set by the drawing, so every supplier will quote the same structure. Change the drawing first, then compare suppliers on the new one.
Can I reduce cost without changing the design?
Only marginally. Quantity breaks and material substitution are the two levers that do not touch geometry, and both are usually smaller than removing a setup or relaxing a tolerance.
What is a DFM response?
Feedback sent with the quote that identifies which design choices drive the price — the tolerance tighter than the function needs, the geometry that forces a second operation, the material bought for an unused property.
