What medical device buyers need from a machining supplier

Medical machined parts are bought against a controlled drawing and a defined documentation package. The important inputs are the material grade, critical dimensions, surface finish, edge condition, thread details, quantity and drawing revision. Our quote review uses those inputs to identify the machining route and to separate functional tolerances from dimensions that can follow the general tolerance block.

Send a STEP or IGES model with a dimensioned PDF, or provide a DWG, DXF or PDF drawing. We return DFM feedback with a quote within 24 hours. The review can flag deep bores, thin walls, sharp internal corners, difficult-to-measure features and tight tolerances before production begins. If your device program requires a specific checking report, certificate, process approval or packaging instruction, state it in the RFQ so it can be reviewed before the quote is finalized.

This page describes machining capability and purchasing considerations. It It does not imply registration, approval or listing by any regulator or approval body; where a programme needs specific documents, ask us and we will confirm exactly what can be supplied. Buyers should identify any regulated-program requirement at the drawing and quotation stage.

Parts we machine for medical equipment

Typical parts include small shafts, bushings, sleeves, spacers, pins, brackets, housings, covers, fittings, adapters and custom fasteners. CNC turning suits round parts where the bore, outside diameter and faces must remain concentric. CNC milling suits housings, brackets, plates and fixtures with pockets, hole patterns and locating surfaces. Swiss-type machining is available for small-diameter, higher-volume turned parts.

The best process depends on which features control the assembly. A bearing seat, guide bore, locating face or threaded interface may need a tighter tolerance than an outside edge. We quote precision features to the drawing rather than applying +/-0.01 mm to every dimension. General dimensions follow ISO 2768-m unless the drawing supplies another general tolerance requirement.

Materials, finishes and surface requirements

Available material families include stainless steel, aluminium, carbon and alloy steel, brass, copper and titanium. Stainless grades listed for machining include 301, 303, 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 410, 416 and 17-4PH; aluminium includes 2024, 5052, 6061 and 7075; steel options include 1045, 1215, 4140, D2 and O1. Titanium Grade 2 and Grade 5 and other grades are reviewed against the drawing and the required material certificate, and the grade-by-grade list sits on our materials page.

Finishing options include passivation, anodizing, polishing, brushing, black oxide, plating and heat treatment through our vetted partner network. Specify the surfaces that contact other components, the faces that must remain masked and any roughness requirement. Surface treatment can affect a bore, thread or press fit, so it should be included in the drawing or RFQ rather than added after machining.

Documentation, samples and repeat orders

Each order ships with a material certificate (MTR) and pre-shipment photos of the actual parts. The packing list and carton markings are prepared before dispatch. These documents do not replace any additional quality record required by your device program; they are the standard documentation included with the order.

Production starts from 50 pieces per style and material. Prototype quantities are reviewed against the drawing, and a sample batch can be used to check fit before a repeat order. Samples typically ship in 5-10 days and production in 25-35 days after drawing approval. Material availability, finishing and additional checking requirements can change the final schedule.

To request a quote, send the part number, revision, quantity, material grade, finish, critical dimensions and required documents through the request a quote form. Related pages cover CNC machining, tolerances and material certificates.

Medical components live or die on the finish and the paperwork, not on the geometry. Parts that need a burr-free edge and a clean surface usually go through CNC milling followed by a finishing operation, and small locating hardware through custom pins — where the diameter tolerance is the functional dimension.
